I first met a young college student named Michelle in 2000 while working on a project. She was young and enthusiastic about her music even though she was just starting to put together a project. She was writing songs and looking for a place to record. It just so happens that i was working on a song called “SHE” for my first solo album. I gave her the rough cut of what I had and asked her to write whatever she felt based on what I laid down. She comes back a week later with it perfected and in the same form that you hear on the final mix of the album. fast-forward 15 years and she is definitely doing her thing up in New York City, where she moved following her graduation from University of Texas. I am considerably older than AVA and I consider her a lil musical sister of sorts and I am proud to see her working up in the Big Apple.
Ava Raiin was born Michelle Renee in Minneapolis, with her twin sister, and raised between Minnesota with mom and Texas with dad; two pretty radical opposites. And tension between opposites shows up in Ava’s work, as well: a base of classic R&B tweaked and stretched with electronic flourishes. After an unconventional childhood Ava moved to NYC and made her rounds in the artist circuit singing cover songs at open mic nights. A series of fateful meetings and introductions led her to stints in modeling, full-time creative production and touring gigs as a background singer and featured vocalist with a range of artists across the spectrum. Over the last few years Ava has shared the stage and collaborated with Melissa Etheridge, Blood Orange / Dev Hynes, Carly Rae Jepsen, Solange Knowles, Chrisette Michele and others and is now in the midst of making a new solo record.
