Just over 500 citizens of Austin, TX gathered in East Austin for a candle light vigil for Sandra Bland who many believe was killed at the hands of law enforcement in Waller County, Texas. The vigil and march were attended by a vast array of races and genders it was all-inclusive but was squarely focused on justice for Sandra Bland and other victims of police brutality. The spirit was strong amongst the attendees and the message was let’s not just march and feel great tonight but let’s organize and come together so that we can prevent more tragedies like Sandra Bland from happening.
The march started at Victory Grill and went right down the middle of the world famous 6th Street in Austin which drew a few inappropriate comments from patrons on 6th but mostly a bit of awe and a lot of recording with cell phones. The vigil was organized by a collective of black sistas Ayana Flewellen, Fatima Lsdfg Mann, X’ene Sky Taylor. The message was clear #SandySpeaks and keep organizing, this is more than 140 characters.
